11 Paracord, materials, knotting techniques

As a beginner it often can be quite overwhelming to shop at our store and see the amount of materials and possibilities you have. Therefore we have made a special page for starters just like yourself! Click here to go to the starters page overview. We recommend you to start with either knotting a paracord dog collar or leash!

Biothane and PVC Coated Webbing are almost the same product and are also used for the same purposes. Biothane is in this category an A-brand and of a slightly better quality than B-brand PVC Coated Webbing.
Our colours with the designation 'neon' are not luminous or reflective. The name only indicates that it is a bright colour. The only products that can actually light up have the designation 'glow in the dark'.

Products with the same name that are made of the same material (e.g. PPM or nylon) have exactly the same colour.
To illustrate, all PPM ropes with the name 'Ocean Blue' are the same colour.

Products made of different materials with a similar name do not have the same colour.

The best way to attach a rivet is to press it gradually with a pair of pliers. Laying a piece of fabric over the rivet prevents damage to the product.

Generally speaking, you need end caps in the same size as the rope (e.g. a 10mm end cap for a 10mm rope).

When you attach an end cap, it can seem as if the rope is too thick for the end cap. This is easy to solve. When you heat the end of the rope, you can press the sides slightly. Then the end cap fits on the rope.

The amount of cord you require for a specific bracelet or other knotting pattern depends on the specific knotting technique. A commonly used knotting technique is the Cobra Weave. For this knotting pattern you need around 13 cm of cord for each cm of bracelet.

Are you planning on knotting a knot from the MatchMaker, than use the MatchMaker calculator of that specific knot to find out how much rope you need. Click here to go to the MatchMaker (click on the knot you want to make and find the calculator in the heading).

Different knotting patterns can be find in the MatchMaker. MatchMaker provides different types of knots, inspiration figures, rope calculator for that specific knot and sometimes even tutorials.

The most commonly used paracord for knotting is Type III 550 Paracord. This cord is about 4mm thick and consists of a sheath (colored exterior) and a core of 7 yarns, each consisting of 2 strands. The number '550' indicates the breaking strength with a static load. The breaking strength for Type III 550 is about 250 kg (equal to 550 lbs/pounds).

Because the American Army also uses paracord, there is another type that complies with military supply standards. These standards are recorded under the code Mil-C-5040H. In compliance with these standards, Paracord Type III 550 with Mil-spec (Military specifications) consists of 7 core yarns, made up from 3 strands. So, this type is stronger, but also suppler than the normal Type III 550 Paracord.

Conclusion: Mil-spec Type III 550 Paracord is stronger and more pleasant to use compared to the normal Type III 550 Paracord. Mil-spec Type III 550 Paracord is an excellent choice in example, for use in outdoor sports.

The most commonly used paracord for the knotting of bracelets is Type III 550 Paracord. Type I is often used as accessory cord for decoration of bracelets, but could also be used for, in example, bracelets for babies.

90 Micro cord – 1mm – breaking force 40 kg
100 Type I – approx. 1,6 mm – breaking force 45 kg
400 Type II – approx. 3 mm – breaking force 180 kg
550 Type III – approx. 3,8 mm – breaking force 250 kg
750 Type IV – approx. 4,2 mm – breaking force 340 kg
1250 Type V - approx. 6 mm - breaking force 565 kg

The paracord you buy from us, is produced by THE American producer of paracord (GSA Compliant). They have been producing cords for 200 years and supply the same paracord for the American army as we sell in our webshop. They state the following:

"Don't be fooled by other manufacturer's #550 with 7-cores. Many times it is made with inferior yarns, and will not meet the #550 pound tensile test. #550 cord is the 'real deal'; whether you are purchasing the Government's Mil-C-5040 Type III specification, or our own designed commercial version of #550 Paracord, you will not be dissatisfied with this product. We guarantee it".

The plastic buckles are made to slip out under excessive force so you can not get stuck behind something. Plastic buckles are not strong enough for dogs that can exert a lot of force in motion on a buckle. The 'half metal' buckles are unsuitable for dog collars as well. The better suited are the aluminium/metall buckles, these are much stronger than the plastic buckles. These buckles are also being used by the well known pet brand  "Hunter".

The best method is to work with two D-rings if you make a dog collar. Place the D-rings on each side of the buckle. You can attach the dog leash on two D-rings instead of one D-ring.
