For example, the most commonly used "Paracord Type III" is also referred to as "550 Paracord" because it has a breaking force of 550 lbs. (249 kg). Because of the popularity of paracord there are many variants available. The majority of paracord users prefer nylon. Nylon feels more natural than the more plastic polyester. Nylon paracord is also more elastic, which is experienced as pleasant by knotters.

For example, the most commonly used "Paracord Type III" is also referred to as "550 Paracord" because it has a breaking force of 550 lbs. (249 kg). In addition to Type III, Type II is also widely used for more elegant knotting and 'Type I', 'Micro' and 'Nano' are often used as accessory cord. The term "Milspec Paracord" is used for Paracord that is made to the strict U.S. Military specifications and is very suitable for outdoor knotting.
